slab tour! even though the wsl will be less interesting without you most surfers would rather see you surfing epic waves around the world rather than competing. your best and most interesteing surfing isn't done in heats.

You know with a little bit of training you could be a phenomenal evangelist. Getting people to heaven is the real challenge. You and Tebow the football player and Bethany Hamilton could be a dream team, join up with a high powered godly evangelist and spark a global revival bringing millions to eternal life.

That insight about being where you don’t want to be and everything stopping it is pretty spot on. At the same time, I wonder if the hiccups we encounter when it feels like we didn’t want to be somewhere aren’t just tests of our will in general, tests to see how bad we want something. Because I’ve changed focus many times based upon what feels right at that moment, letting resistance be the standard for justifying taking an easier direction, and I’m not sure that was all right even though it felt right then. Maybe those phases were meant to be times to regroup, but I also sorta feel like you’ll be asked to step up again, almost precisely where you changed course because you didn’t care for the hiccup that happened when you were charting course years and years before. I would say I believe in listening to your body, but as I’m getting older I’m starting to think Goggins is right, that our bodies will follow once they know our minds refuse to let them be defeated.

"Competing is selfish" ... is all based on getting financed ... which on one hand is great, on the other really sucks. What would our reality look like if we all chucked being dependent upon the corporations whom run our lives ... and were only dependent on each other ... then could have surfing festivals where everyone celebrates everyone else's surfing.

So good John. There's so many though leaders out there trying to help people achieve big stuff professionally/ athletically, etc, but I think there's a pronounced lack of voices helping people ask bigger questions about life. It's cool to hear people like you speak to some of the emptiness in accomplishment - it actually inspires me to grow in my gratitude for the life I already have. Always inspired by your life and insight -- thanks for sharing this.

Nice to hear such a successful person acknowledge that competition/winning is a selfish thing. More champions should admit this, I think. For me, not all champion surfers are alike and this distinguishes him (as well as his consistent skill level.)
