It was 10'-12' Hawaiian.
We talked briefly. Then he cheered me on as I caught a solid 12'er.
He was the WORLD CHAMP.
I was just another guy out. But he knew it was an accomplishment for me to stroke my 8'6" Willis Bros pigtail into a 12' Sunset peak.
He is truly a nice guy.
I was a fan from the time he won the French Lacanau Pro.... about 1984.
I remember Mitch Thorson got 5th, and Occy said he "stunk it up."....

It's that same type of consideration that makes me believe Erin is Surfer of the Year imho.
She won Grom Search.
Then she medaled with Team Canada in Panama.
Then she battled through 12 grueling repechage rounds to take individual silver at the ISA's in El Salvador.
Then she won the last CS event of the season seizing a coveted top 10 ranking in dramatic fashion.
Then she won the Haleiwa Pro, again in dramatic fashion.
Then she tops it all off by making the Pipe Masters final on her very first try at just 16 years old?
Wow.
She faces all competitors, in all competitions, and in all conditions, and she just doesn't care. She just works!
And that's a solid year.
